The Ali Naqi Memorial Football Tournament was started in the loving memory of Ali Naqi Shah in 2008.
Ali tragically passed away in March 2006 when he suffered from a cardiac arrest while playing football with friends and family at Westfield Academy.
Born in 1985 Ali suffered from ventricular septal defect (VSD) - also known as a "hole in the heart" for which he required several operations throughout his life.
His tragic and sudden death had a profound effect on the community, and in particular his young family members and friends.
In 2008 a proposal was put forward by the same young people and supported by Ali's family, to organise a football tournament in his memory. So, on Saturday 23rd August 2008 the inaugural Ali Naqi Memorial Football Tournament took place at Westfield Academy with six local teams.
Following the success of the tournament it was proposed and agreed to hold it annually. Since then the tournament has gone from strength to strength, and now in it's 10th year attracts teams from
outside of Watford.
Furthermore, since Ali's passing the local community has lost a number of young people who were Ali's peers and friends, so as Ali would have wanted, we remember them also.
May they all rest in peace.
Every year, all of the money we raise from this great event goes towards a number of local charites (see Charity Partners) in the name of those youth we have lost over the years. Every year we hope to raise more and more for the Watford community.
We hope that you will support the cause.
